DOST-SEI scholars of WVSU hold ‘surviving graduate school’ seminar

DOST-SEI scholars of WVSU hold

‘surviving graduate school’ seminar

GRADUATE school scholars of the Department of Science and Technology in West Visayas State University participated in the two-day live-in seminar in research writing on April 4-5, 2011 at Siete Pecados Hall in Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center.

Themed “Surviving Graduate School: The What’s and How’s of Research Writing,” the seminar was sponsored by the WDSA or the WVSU College of Education Graduate School (WVSU-COE-GS) DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP) Science Education Consortium Component (SECC) Scholars Association.

The first research-related initiative of the four-year-old WDSA was attended by 30 scholars who are presently in the latter part of their graduate schooling. It was graced by: Dr. Editha Sillorequez, WVSU Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and Project Director of the DOST-SEI Scholarship Program in WVSU; Dr. Crisanto Lopez, Jr., science research expert from WVSU; Dr. Elvira Arellano, WVSU COE Associate Dean; Dr. Elnora Loriega, WVSU COE Dean and former VPAA; and Dr. Herman Lagon, founding president of WDSA and the first DOST-SEI ASTHRDP-SECC doctorate program graduate in the country.

“It is more than enlightening to hear and see experts in the field who share their thoughts and experiences in the area of surviving the pressures of graduate school,” Mrs. Myrna Libutaque, president of WDSA, adding, “it inspires us more to finish our degree—pass the comprehensive exam and conduct the action research, thesis, and dissertation—well and on time.”

Also speakers of the seminar were WDSA members Mr. Agustin Verso, Ms. Cheryl Roncal, Ms. Betty Laxamana, Ms. Annalyn Brillantes, Ms. Lagrimas Saculo, Mr. Harold Cartagena, and Ms. Noralyn Esona who shared their action researches, theses, and dissertation papers. The first five have just graduated their MA in Physics and Math degrees in WVSU this March while Esona and Cartagena are set to finish their dissertation in the middle of the year.

Mr. Cartagena, who happened to be WDSA’s vice president, said: “It is so humbling to listen to the scholarly reactions and comments of my fellow scholars as I share to them my findings. I feel good for the symbiotic and collegial relationship that we forge in this activity. It makes us more motivated to live up with what the DOST-SEI program expects us to accomplish.

Ms. Rosemarie Galvez, WDSA secretary, for her part, said: “We hope that we can hold similar activities in the future and try to extend the invitation to other graduate school scholars and students in the metropolis.”

WDSA member Mrs. Maricel Gomez agreed, saying, “surviving graduate school is indeed a concern of a lot of people, even us DOST scholars; this kind of initiative is proven to be useful and productive, hope this will not be the last.”###

STATE OF THE WDSA ADDRESS (SOWA), July 26, 2010

To all the smart yet bubbly DOST-SEI (WDSA) scholars:

Good day to everyone!

It has been eons ago that we had our thrill-filled acquaintance party, induction of officers, science and math seminars, research forum, and outreach activities. With this, I say, we did our best to learn, to serve and to have fun.

I am sure that by this time, you are still laser focused on your masters and phd chores. I salute you for that. Some of our colleagues have already finished and passed their comprehensive exams. We just hope that they will bravely bear the brunt of thesis and dissertation works.

Nonetheless, let me update you (ala State of the WDSA Address--SOWA) of what is to expect this school year.

Stipend: Our allowance is already in the works by this time (July 25). It will cover our June and July stipend, including our book allowance for the first semester. According to Ma’am Andrea Trespeces, who renews her contract as the WVSU DOST-SEI consortium secretary, the check from the DOST national has already arrived and will be processed. It is conservatively expected, assuming that there will be no extraordinary delays, that the money will be deposited to your account by either on the first or second week of August.

Donation and Fees. As part of our unanimously-agreed commitment to the WVSU College of Education of donating an LCD multi-media projector (from WDSA Resolution No. 3 and Minutes of our March 13 General Meeting and Financial Reporting), we still need an amount of P9,000 on top of our P20,000 on-hand fund for the said donation. With this, we are reminding you of the following fees: (1) P200/scholar Key Chain Fund Raising project (key chain to be given this August as soon as the list of members for the SY 2010-2011 are finalized), and (2) P500/scholar for the semestral membership fee. Fees must be given to Ms. Andrea Trespeces at the WVSU COE Graduate School Office as soon as possible. I hope that this simple show of gratitude to the school that has helped us pursue our professional growth as teachers will make us more proud of being DOST scholars. We wish to donate the said LCD on or before the second week of August.

Election of New Set of Officers. We are already long overdue as to our Election of New Set of Officers. Our newly-ratified constitution says that this must have been done the first week of July. But after due information dissemination and consultation with the officers and members (via text, e-mail and one-on-one correspondence), it was agreed that it will be held after we get our first stipend this first semester. Hence, we will be holding our Election of Officers for the SY 2010-2011 this August 21 at ANP 1, and hopefully have our Acquaintance Party by early September just like last year (Sept. 12, 2009).

Other Projects. We have donated two sacks of rice and feeds to the residents in the Regional Rehabilitation Center for the Youth Offenders (RRCY) in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. Also, aside from partnering with the Student Council in the conduct of the Research Forum held February, last year, we have likewise facilitated a P5,000-donation courtesy of Rex Bookstore, to be given to the College of Education via the SC to be used for the school’s outreach program.

At present, our Free SMT2 (Science-Math Teachers Training) project is still temporarily mothballed due to unavailability of scholars. This is understandable for everyone is so busy with their academic chores. I am positive though that this noble concept of us helping other teachers in Western Visayas hone their skills in math and science will be pushed through by the next set of officers (and the ex-DOST scholars, also known as Associate Members of WDSA) this school year.

Note that the WDSA, the first of its kind in Vis-Min region, was founded two years ago to serve as a venue for us scholars to share our resources, may that be human, financial, moral, professional, or technical resource. Hence, please do not hesitate to contact any of your co-DOST scholar for help or to help.

That is all for now. See you in the Election of officers this August.

Respectfully,

Engr. Herman M. Lagon

President

Student, PhD in Science Education Major in Math

PS: Please pray for your brothers and sisters (me included) who are now preparing for their comprehensive exams. Your sincere desire to wish us to pass this tough academic hurdle will be very much appreciated. Thank you so much.

INFOS AND UPDATES

May 24, 2010

Fellow DOST Scholars,

In case you did not notice po, our stipend for the month of April and May may now be withdrawn in your account. Please be reminded that, as usual, our June and July may be delayed also due to the usual paper work bureaucracy in the DOST and WVSU offices. To be conservative, expect these to be ready for withdrawal by mid August.

Meanwhile, please prepare your P500 membership fee for the first semester of the school year 2010-2011 for the WDSA. This may be required to be paid during the enrollment come first week of June.

By the way, as to our WDSA key chain, this will be ready for distribution by middle of June. For our General Assembly and election of our new set of WDSA officers, we will have it July or August as provided by our Constitution. On the other hand, we are about to purchase this late June our donation of P27-thousand worth Multi-Media Projector to the WVSU College of Education Graduate School.

Thank you for your continued support to WDSA. We hope and pray that we continue to strive for excellence and be very generous and grateful to our fellow scholars, the DOST system and to our Alma Mater.

Engr. Herman M. Lagon, WDSA President

PS: We pray for the success of our DOST scholars in the Masters and PhD programs for their action research defense this June and comprehensive exam this July.

MINUTES of the March 13 MEETING

Date: March 13, 2010;Time: 4:30 pm-5:30 p.m.;Venue: ANP 1

Present:

14 DOST-SEI scholars and Ma’am Andrea Trespeces

(MA Physics and PhD Biology DOST scholars excused due to Cebu Seminar set March 14-20, 2010)

The following are the summary of the meeting last March 13, 2010.

  • Mr. Harold Cartagena, WDSA Treasurer, presented the latest financial report and the update of the collections of membership fee together with the payment of Php 200.00/scholar for the “Key Chain Fund Raising project”.
  • Mr. Herman Lagon, WDSA President, discussed the proposal of some scholars that instead of giving Laptop to WVSU-COE Graduate School, the organization will be donating LCD Projector for the benefit and use of many scholars.
  • Sir H also talked about the “Key Chain Fund Raising Project”. According to him, the amount of 100 pesos will be allotted for 2 key chains as capital. This means that the organization will gain 100 pesos/scholar as additional fund.
    • One of the scholars suggested that instead of having 2 key chains, only 1 key chain will be provided amounting to 50 pesos so that the organization will gain 150 pesos/scholar since the money for the proposed LCD Projector is still not sufficient.
    • The suggestion was approved so instead of having 2 key chains, each scholar will receive only 1 key chain with his/her name, WDSA Logo, number and email address)
  • Since the Physics group will be going to Cebu for the Physics Lecture Series (March 14 – 20, 2010), Sir H proposed that the organization will give an amount for the “pasalubong” of the DOST personnel and guests/lecturers of the said Lecture Series (just like what they did during the Math Lecture Series) and this was approved.
    • Sir Harold gave 500 pesos to Ana Lyn Gallego for the proposed “pasalubong” and it was also agreed that the remaining needed amount will be divided to the Physics Scholars who are going to the said Lecture.
  • One of the scholars presented that the WDSA Officers should meet at least once a month to discuss any problems or any matter concerning the organization. It was also agreed that the officers will be the voice of the scholars.
  • During the meeting, it was also discussed that the clearance will not be given by Miss Andrea to the scholar if he/she did not pay or settle any accountability to the organization.
  • It was also presented during the meeting that there will be a party for the members of the organization this summer.

** Meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.

URGENT INFORMATION AND REMINDER

All DOST-SEI Scholars,
Sadly, as of today, we have only 13 (out of 37) scholars that have paid their membership dues for the second semester. I am humbly appealing to you to settle this account with ma'am Andrea or sir Harold on or before March 13 (same thing with the P200 for the fund raising key chain project). Note that we need this for our unanimously agreed plan to purchase a laptop as donation to the WVSU COE GS and for our other activities.
Good news is, our stipend is up by next week. Conservative estimate is it must be ready for withdrawal by March 10. Hopefully you take a small slice of your stipend for our P700 (P500 2nd sem membership fee and P200 key chain project) payment to be remitted to Ma'am Andrea.
Our treasurer, Harold, will be posting on school board and blogsite (wvsudostscholars.blogspot.com) the financial report for the second semester on or before March 31.Thank you so much.
For the betterment of science and math literacy in the country, we remain.
Engr. Herman M. Lagon
President, WDSA

KEY CHAIN FUND RAISING PROJECT

All DOST SEI Scholars:

From the emails, text messages and personal messages I have received, it appears that all responses are positive. Hence, the Key Chain Plan (at P200 for 2 key chains) is a go. We will be using the Directory List from Ma'am Andrea Trespeces as our reference for the text that will be included in the chain. It will be out most likely by the third week of March. Just get it from Ma'am Andrea (for the payment, also remit it to Ma'am Andrea or Sir Harold, our treasurer).

Thank you so much.

For the development of science and march literacy in the country, we remain.

Engr. Herman Lagon

President

PS1: The proceeds for this Key Chain Project will be added for our fund that will defray the expenses for our planned donation of a laptop to the WVSU COE GS, under the condition that the DOST scholars will have priority use of the said laptop.

PS2: According to fellow scholar Socorro Zerrudo (MA Physics), the Physics Cebu Seminar is finally set March 14-20. Bon Voyage! Make us proud!

ALL SCHOLARS

Please be informed that the stipend for February is already in the WVSU Accounting Office. This means we need to wait for two weeks max to be able to get it in cold cash in our Land Bank accounts.
Likewise, there will be a set Vis-Min Seminar in Physics this middle of March, 2010. Only physics majors are the ones to be financed to attend in this gathering. The venue is tentatively set in Cebu but there is a possibility that it might be held here in Iloilo. Be aware.
I also would like to thank those who have helped in the Feb. 13 Research Forum and the Feb. 19 Space Education Seminar held in the Rehearsal Hall and the Teleconferencing Room of WVSU. Your sense of sacrifice, generosity and community is greatly acknowledged. My sincere thanks.
Engr. Herman M. Lagon
WDSA President
PS: Please pay your semestral membership dues of P500 to either Sir Harold Cartagena, our treasurer, or to Ms Andrea Trespeces, the DOST-SEI coordinator. Should we be short in our projection to collect an amount of P20,000 this semester for our proposed laptop donation to the school, I am informing you in advance that we might humbly ask some P200 each from all the members just to ensure the purchase of the said laptop. As to the financial condition of our organization, our treasurer is ready to present to you in detail the expenses anytime.
For the advancement of science and technology in the country, we remain.

RESEARCH FORUM, FEB. 13

ALL SCHOLARS:

Please be informed that there will be a Research Forum set Saturday, February 13 at the Rehearsal Room in WVSU. This affair is co-sponsored by our organization so you are all requested to wear your DOST Scholars shirts and be present all the times so your services may be asked, if necessary.

You are mostly important during the afternoon forum on Math and Science Investigations which are set at the IICT and Quezon Hall Rooms.

Thanks so much.

Engr. Herman Lagon

President

To our WDSA brothers and sisters:

The brother of our fellow DOST scholar Jean Lauresta (MA Ed. Mathematics) who is Private First Class Jonel Lauresta, 29, was killed Monday, September 21, in an ambush by the Abu Sayyaf in Indanan, Sulu.

His body is now resting at the house of Ma’am Jean at Brgy. Don Esteban, La Paz, Iloilo City.

In this line, the WDSA officers would like to encourage its membership to extend whatever help it can give—financially, spiritually and collegially—for the family of our very own fellow DOST scholar Jean Lauresta and his brother—another Ilonggo hero—Jonel.

FINANCIALLY, WE WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE EVERY MEMBER TO AT LEAST, IF POSSIBLE, CHIP IN A LITTLE AMOUNT INDIVIDUALLY AND REMIT IT TO MA’AM ANDREA TRESPECES IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION OFFICE ON OR BEFORE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3. SOME OF THE WDSA PEOPLE WILL BE GOING TO THE WAKE IN THE AFTERNOON OF THE SAME DAY (ABOUT 5 P.M. DOST post-grad scholars hold party at Midtown

  • DOST-SEI National Director in attendance

THE SCHOLARS in the graduate school of the Department of Science and Technology at West Visayas State University had a night full of wisdom, fun and surprises with no less than DOST-SEI National Program Director, Dr. Ester Ogena, as one of the guests. The orientation, induction of officers and acquaintance party of WDSA was held Saturday night, September 12, at the Iloilo Midtown Hotel, Iloilo City.

In between serious speeches, professors and students alike held, among others, games with chopsticks, beans, masking tapes and a little bit of naughty shrewdness as indicators of winning. Dance intermission number a.k.a. initiation rites of the neophytes (new DOST scholars-Batch 3) and door prizes of 15 scientific calculators and three memory sticks also painted colors in the night spree.

Harold Cartagena, WDSA treasurer and games coordinator, observed: “This is cool! These people, including myself, are respected, brilliant educators and leaders of their own schools. Now, it is as if all inhibitions are set aside that everybody started to laugh out loud and have fun.”

Of course, the rest of the proceedings were regarded as nourishing.

Dr. Ogena challenged the scholars to traverse long “distances over time overtime,” finish their courses in full acceleration; while Dr. Editha Sillorequez, the WDSA Senior Adviser and WVSU College of Education Dean, urge students to be seriously diligent in their school chores. She also cracked “apple pie,” “log and timber” and “flat tire” math jokes. Associate Dean and WDSA Adviser Dr. Alona Belarga, for her part, reminded the scholars to “never quit” and always move forward amid adversities.

The Orientation, Induction of Officers, and Acquaintance Party of the WDSA, also known as the DOST Scholars Association, was also highlighted by the oath-taking of the elected officers for the school year 2009-2010.

Elected president for the second term is Engr. Herman Lagon. Also took oath of office were: Ms. Jessica Arsenal, vice president, Ms. Ana Lyn Gallego, secretary, Mr. Harold Cartagena, treasurer, Mr. Ricky Quibingco, auditor. Ms. Veminrose Clariza, Ms. Jean Laurista, and Mr. Ranel Abellar are Batch Information Officers.

Lagon, Arsenal, and Cartagena are taking up PhD in Science Education Major in Math, while Abellar and Gallego are in to MA in Physics studies. Clariza, on the other hand, takes PhD in Biology course, while Laurista and Quibingco are MA Math students. They were elected July 18 at the ANP Building of WVSU, immediately after the General Assembly has ratified their Constitution and By-Laws.

“Our responsibility as ‘Mga Iskolar ng Bayan’ does not only reside in our respective schools or to our respective students but to the whole of the Filipino society. The government has invested a lot in us, it is just fair that we must give back to them in all forms possible,” said Engr. Lagon in his acceptance speech.

Engr. Lagon, a second batch grantee, also said, “DOST and WVSU have invested millions of pesos on us with the expectation that we will eventually help mitigate the country’s enormous problem in science and math literacy. Even if we are still students of DOST right now, we have to start doing service ASAP for time is of the essence.”

Hence, Engr. Lagon and the WDSA have the following plans: outreach program in Guimaras this December, sponsoring of a Research Seminar on February, donation of Multi-Media Projector to WVSU COE Graduate School, and the Free SMT2 Program which seeks to offer free trainings and seminar-workshops to public school teachers in Western Visayas.

“These service-oriented projects are our humble contribution to helping curb illiteracy in the country; it is our commitment and we will all try to fulfill this,” said WDSA vice president Arsenal.

To note, the two-year-old organization is called WDSA which stands for West Visayas State University-College of Education (WVSU-COE) Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program-Science Education Consortium Component (ASTHRDP-SECC) Scholars Association. Ms. Andrea Trespeces is the project staff of the DOST-ASTHRDP-SECC program.

All WDSA members enjoy free tuition by the DOST-SEI ASTHRDP-SECC program. On top of this are the P7,000 yearly book allowance, a semestral travel allowance, P23,000 (PhD scholars) or P15,000 (MA scholars) worth monthly stipend, and P60,000-worth dissertation allowance, among others. But before they were accepted, the scholars’ transcript of records and teaching performance went through series of assessments from the national to the regional DOST offices. The qualifiers were panel interviewed by the DOST national representatives and the final list of qualifiers went through with the WVSU COE Graduate School entrance test.###
